Patios & decorative paving

Patios made for long summer evenings.

Custom patios, paths and paved areas in porcelain, natural stone or concrete slab. Laid level, with the right fall, on a base that won’t move.

Patios & Decorative Paving

Somewhere to sit out and enjoy it.

A good patio becomes the most used room in the house from April to September. We help you work out the right size, where the sun falls, and which paving suits the house and your budget.

Then we do it properly: dig out, lay and compact the sub-base, set the slabs on a mortar bed with an even fall away from the house, and point the joints so weeds and water stay out.

  • Porcelain patios in a wide range of colours and sizes
  • Indian sandstone, slate and other natural stone
  • Paths, steps and stepping stones
  • Edging, borders and decorative gravel areas
  • Drainage falls and channel drains where needed
  • Removal of old slabs, turf and spoil

The detail

How we do it.

The parts of the job that don’t show in the photos, but make all the difference over time.

Planned around the space

We look at the size, the sun, the step from the back door and how you’ll use it, then set it out with you on site.

Dug out properly

Turf and soil come out to the right depth and leave with us. You don’t end up with a heap of spoil in the corner.

Compacted sub-base

A compacted layer of hardcore is what stops a patio sinking or rocking. It is the part we refuse to rush.

A fall for drainage

Every patio is laid with a gentle fall so rainwater runs away from the house rather than sitting on the surface.

Neat, consistent joints

Slabs are set out square with even joints, and cuts are kept to the edges where they won’t catch the eye.

Pointed to finish

Joints are filled and pointed to suit the paving, which keeps weeds down and the patio looking sharp.

Questions

Patios & Decorative Paving: FAQs

Can’t see your question? Call 07935 762559 or drop us an email.

Porcelain is hard-wearing, low maintenance and resists staining, which is why it is so popular. Natural stone such as Indian sandstone has more variation and a softer, traditional look. We are happy to talk through the pros and cons and bring samples if it helps.

Back garden patios usually don’t need permission. In a front garden, if you are covering more than 5 square metres, the surface needs to be permeable or drain onto a lawn or border, otherwise planning permission is needed. We will make sure the design meets this.

It depends on the size, the access and how much digging is involved. We will give you a realistic timeframe with your quote, and let you know if the weather is likely to affect it.

Sometimes, but we rarely recommend it. Laying over old slabs raises the level, which can cause problems at the house wall and damp-proof course. It is usually better to lift the old patio and start with a sound base.
